What is actually happening
This is different from a machine that will not spin: here the drum does not move at all, even at slow wash speed. On a belt-driven machine the belt has almost always come off or snapped, and the giveaway is that the motor can be heard running with nothing happening. On a direct-drive machine there is no belt, so the fault is the motor or its control.
The Hoover fault codes that point at this
A Hoover washing machine will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to drum not turning:
- E00 — The machine's main control board has failed or was never given its software settings, so it can't run a wash.
- E01 — The machine can't confirm the door is locked shut, so it refuses to start the cycle.
- E02 — The machine hasn't taken in enough water in the time it allows, so it has stopped rather than run dry.
- E03 — The machine hasn't managed to empty the water out within the time it allows, so it has stopped with the drum still full.
- E04 — The machine has decided it's being overfilled with water and has shut itself down to stop a flood.
- E06 — The machine's main control board can't read its own stored settings, so it refuses to start a cycle.
- E07 — The machine thinks the door lock is stuck in the locked position, so it won't carry on or let you open the door.
- E08 — The machine can't tell how fast the drum motor is turning, so it stops rather than risk running blind.

The usual causes on a Hoover washing machine
- A snapped or dislodged drive belt
- Worn motor carbon brushes, leaving too little power to turn a loaded drum
- A seized drum bearing
- A failed motor or motor control board on direct-drive machines
- An item jammed between the inner and outer drum

- Listen during a cycle for a motor running with no drum movement
