What is actually happening
The machine fills, then holds the cycle while the element brings the water up to the selected temperature. If the element has failed open-circuit the temperature never rises, so the machine either waits indefinitely, jumps to the next stage with cold water, or stops with a heater fault code. Clothes come out looking washed but not clean, and greasy marks stay put.
The Montpellier fault codes that point at this

- E16 — The machine thinks the water inside has got too hot, so it has stopped the programme.
- E36 — The machine has found the water heating element isn't working, so it can't warm the water for your wash.
- F07 — The machine thinks the water has got too hot, or the temperature sensor is giving a false reading, so it has stopped the cycle.
