Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What E20 actually means

The machine has found a fault in the circuit that locks and releases the door, and the usual symptom is that the door stays locked.

Beko's own fault-finding puts E20 down to the door lock circuit being shorted — either the solenoid lock itself or the switching device on the main control board that feeds it. Because the machine can no longer be sure the door is safely under its control, it halts and holds the door shut rather than allowing a cycle to run.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty solenoid door lock (the most common finding)
  • Short circuit on the main control board's door lock switching circuit
  • Moisture or detergent residue affecting the lock assembly
  • Damaged wiring or connector at the door lock

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on — occasionally the lock releases and the code clears
  2. Check nothing (a towel corner, a sock) is trapped in the door seal holding the catch under strain
  3. Make sure the door is pushed firmly shut and the catch lines up with the lock, not sitting proud

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
