Beko E21 washing machine: what it means & what to check

What E21 actually means

There is more water in the drum than the machine can safely pump out, so it has stopped rather than carry on.

The water level sensor is reporting a level above the point at which the drain pump can clear the tub. Beko's boards treat that as an overfill/unsafe-to-pump condition and halt the cycle, usually with a drum still full of water. The cause is either genuinely too much water going in, water that won't go out, or a pressure system that is misreading the level.

What E21 looks like on a Beko washing machine

Most people find this page having searched for what the machine is doing rather than the code itself. On a Beko washing machine, E21 usually shows up as one or more of these:

Machine not draining
Water left in the drum at the end of the cycle
Stops mid-cycle full of water
Standing water in the bottom
Not filling with water
No water going in

What usually causes it

A blocked or slow drain — filter, pump or waste pipe
Kinked or badly fitted drain hose, or the hose pushed too far down the standpipe
Water siphoning back in from the plumbing
Pressure hose to the level sensor blocked with sludge, so the board reads a false high level
Water inlet valve passing water when it should be shut

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power back up and see if the code returns.
Check the drain hose along its whole run for kinks, crushing behind the machine, or being pushed too far into the standpipe.
Clean the pump filter at the bottom front — have a bowl and towels ready, there will be a lot of water with this fault.
Check the sink or standpipe the machine drains into is not itself blocked or slow.
Turn off the water tap at the wall and see whether the drum keeps filling — if it does, that points to a valve fault.
