What E23 actually means

The machine can't get a reliable signal from the door switch, so it won't start a wash because it can't confirm the door is properly shut and locked.

Beko's control board watches a switch inside the door lock assembly that tells it whether the door is genuinely closed. When that signal doesn't arrive, or contradicts what the board expects, it logs E23 and holds the programme rather than filling with water behind a door it can't vouch for. In practice you press start, the display sits there, and nothing happens.

What usually causes it

  • Worn or failed door lock/interlock unit \u2014 by far the most common finding
  • Door not closing fully because the catch or hinge has dropped, or laundry is trapped in the seal
  • Damaged or disconnected wiring at the door lock connector
  • A fault on the main control board reading the switch input

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open and reclose the door firmly, making sure no clothing is caught in the rubber seal.
  2. Check the door isn't overloaded so it can't pull fully shut against the drum.
  3. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then power up and try a short programme \u2014 this clears a one-off glitch.
  4. Look at the plastic catch on the door and the hole it goes into for anything obviously broken or blocked.

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
