What E28 actually means
The machine can't confirm the door has locked, so it won't start the wash.
Before it takes in any water, the washer waits for a signal back from the door lock telling it the door is properly latched and locked. With E28 that signal never arrives, so the machine stops rather than filling with the door possibly unlocked. In most cases the door lock unit itself, or the wiring feeding it, is at fault.
What usually causes it
- Faulty door lock mechanism (the most common cause)
- Door not fully shut, or something caught in the seal
- Loose or damaged wiring to the door lock
- Worn door catch or hinges leaving the door slightly out of line
- Fault on the main control board
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Open the door and close it again firmly \u2014 you should hear it latch.
- Check nothing is trapped in the door seal, such as a sock or a corner of bedding.
- Look at the door catch and see whether the door sits square when closed and doesn't have to be forced.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, switch it back on and try a short programme.
