Blomberg E02 fridge freezer: what it means & what to check

What E02 actually means

The fridge section's evaporator sensor — the probe that watches the temperature of the cooling coil behind the back wall — is no longer giving the control board a sensible reading.

Blomberg's control board constantly checks the resistance of each temperature sensor. If the fridge evaporator sensor reads as an open circuit or a short circuit, the board flags E02, lights the alarm indicator and stops trusting that sensor. Rather than shutting down, it falls back to a fixed cooling and defrost pattern, so the fridge normally keeps working — but it can no longer time defrosts by coil temperature, which is why people often see ice building up on the back wall, patchy cooling, or the compressor running longer than it should.

What usually causes it

The evaporator sensor itself has failed open or short circuit — by far the most common finding
A loose, corroded or damp plug where the sensor connects to the control board
Wiring to the sensor chafed or pinched, often after the appliance has been moved
A fault on the control board's sensor input, which is the less common cause but does happen

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the wall for a minute and back on — occasionally a momentary connection glitch clears and the alarm does not return
Check nothing is packed hard against the back wall of the fridge, and note whether ice is forming there, as that tells the engineer how long the sensor has been out
Note the actual fridge temperature over a few hours so you know whether food is still being kept safely while you wait
