What E04 actually means

The heater that melts frost off the freezer's cooling coil isn't doing its job, so the machine has flagged a defrost fault.

A no-frost freezer periodically warms a small heater against the evaporator to clear the ice that builds up on it. The control board times that defrost and expects the coil to reach temperature; on these Blomberg models it raises E04 when the defrost keeps running to its maximum time without succeeding — in some versions after several consecutive hour-long attempts. Cooling itself normally carries on as usual, so the freezer will feel cold for a while, but frost keeps thickening on the coil until airflow chokes off and temperatures start to drift up.

What E04 looks like on a Blomberg fridge freezer

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

Turn the appliance off at the socket for a minute and back on — if the fault was a one-off glitch, the code will clear.
Check the freezer door is closing fully and the seal isn't folded or dirty; a door slightly ajar pumps warm damp air in and makes frosting much worse.
Make sure food or packaging isn't pressed against the vents at the back of the freezer compartment.
If ice has already built up heavily, empty the freezer and leave it switched off with the door open to defrost naturally — never chip at ice with anything sharp.
