Blomberg E87 error — washing machine

The machine isn't happy with the water flow through the detergent drawer's filter system — normally this is a code only an engineer sees during a service test, not something that appears during a normal wash.

What E87 actually means

The machine isn't happy with the water flow through the detergent drawer's filter system — normally this is a code only an engineer sees during a service test, not something that appears during a normal wash.

E87 relates to the machine's MFF (drawer filter) flow check and the diverter valve that sends water to it. Blomberg's own notes say this fault is picked up in service mode during installation or testing rather than shown to the customer, so if you're seeing it on the display it needs interpreting by someone who can run the test properly. A common underlying cause is the diverter valve failing, so water never reaches the filter at all.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty diverter valve, so water never reaches the drawer filter
  • Blocked or partly clogged detergent drawer filter
  • Poor water flow into the drawer from a restricted supply
  • Machine left in or exiting a service test routine
  • Fault on the control electronics reading the flow

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on and see if the code returns
  2. Pull the detergent drawer out, rinse it under the tap and clear any detergent sludge before refitting it
  3. Check the cold inlet hose isn't kinked and the tap is fully open
  4. Run a short empty wash to see whether water is actually reaching the drawer

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
