What E04 actually means
The cooler has lost a sensible reading from its defrost sensor and has flagged it as a short circuit, so it has stopped running normally and put the code up instead.
These electriQ dual zone wine coolers monitor the evaporator with a defrost sensor so the control board knows when to run and end a defrost. If the resistance across that sensor reads as a short rather than a plausible temperature, the board can no longer trust it and displays this code — the related code for the opposite fault, an open circuit on the same sensor, is E3. In practice the cabinet may still feel cold, or one zone may drift, but the cooler is no longer controlling itself properly.
What E04 looks like on a ElectriQ fridge freezer

What usually causes it
- Faulty defrost sensor in the cabinet
- Damaged or pinched sensor wiring, often near where it enters the liner
- A poor or corroded plug connection at the control board, sometimes from damp
- Control board misreading the sensor
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the cooler off at the socket for a minute, then switch it back on — occasionally the code clears and does not return
- Check the cooler is not jammed hard against a wall or cabinet and has the ventilation gap the manual asks for, as trapped heat makes sensor and defrost problems worse
- Make sure the door is closing fully and the seal is sitting flat, so the cabinet is not fighting a constant ice build-up
- Note whether both zones are still cooling and whether the code returns straight away — that is the information an engineer will ask for
