Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What F04 actually means

The oven's temperature sensor is giving a reading the control board doesn't trust, so the oven has shut down heating.

F04 means the oven temperature probe is reading outside its normal range \u2014 either the sensor itself has drifted out of tolerance, or its connection has gone open or short circuit. Without a reliable temperature reading the control board won't fire the elements, so the oven either won't heat or stops mid-cook.

What usually causes it

  • Faulty oven temperature probe
  • Loose or damaged plug on the sensor wiring
  • Broken or chafed sensor cable inside the cavity
  • Heat damage to the probe after prolonged high-temperature use
  • Control board fault misreading the sensor

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the oven off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on \u2014 an occasional one-off glitch will clear
  2. Check nothing has been left leaning against the probe inside the cavity, and remove any heavy foil or trays touching it
  3. Try a normal fan oven programme rather than a grill or pyrolytic cycle to see if the fault repeats

When to call someone

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
