What F24 actually means
There's too much water, or too much foam, inside the machine, so it has stopped the cycle to avoid flooding.
The washer monitors the water level in the drum. F24 means the level has climbed past the safe overflow point, or the sensor has been fooled by a heavy build-up of foam. It halts the programme and normally tries to pump the excess away rather than carry on filling.
What usually causes it
- Too much detergent, or the wrong type, creating excessive foam
- A blocked or restricted drain hose or pump filter so water isn't leaving
- Water siphoning back in because the drain hose is pushed too far down the standpipe
- A faulty pressure/water level sensor or its blocked hose
- An inlet valve leaking water in when it should be shut
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then back on, and see if it clears
- Run a rinse or drain/spin cycle with no detergent to clear foam out
- Clean the pump filter at the bottom front (with the machine switched off at the wall and a tray for the water)
- Check the drain hose isn't kinked, trapped or pushed more than about 10cm into the standpipe
- Next wash, cut the detergent right back — use the dose for your load size and water hardness
