What is actually happening
Frost-free appliances have a heater that melts the ice off the evaporator several times a day and drains the water away. When that system fails, the ice grows until it blocks the airflow — and the giveaway is that defrosting fixes it for a few weeks and then it returns. Ice that keeps coming back is a fault; ice on an old-style appliance that has to be defrosted manually is not.
The Blomberg fault codes that point at this
A Blomberg fridge freezer will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to icing up:
- E00 — The sensor that measures the air temperature inside the freezer has stopped giving a sensible reading, so the fridge freezer can no longer control the freezer temperature properly.
- E01 — The control board has lost a sensible reading from one of the freezer's temperature sensors, so it has flagged a fault and dropped into a backup cooling routine.
- E02 — The fridge section's evaporator sensor — the probe that watches the temperature of the cooling coil behind the back wall — is no longer giving the control board a sensible reading.
- E03 — The sensor that measures the air temperature inside the fridge section has stopped giving the control board a sensible reading, so the fridge no longer knows how cold it actually is.
- E04 — The heater that melts frost off the freezer's cooling coil isn't doing its job, so the machine has flagged a defrost fault.
- E08 — The temperature sensor inside the automatic ice maker has stopped giving a sensible reading, so the control board has shut the ice-making side down.
- E09 — The automatic ice maker isn't turning as it should, so the fridge freezer has flagged a fault with it — the cooling itself is unaffected.
- E10 — The temperature sensor for the convertible "joker" compartment — the one that can be set to run as either a fridge or a freezer — has failed electrically, so the control board no longer knows how cold that compartment is.

The usual causes on a Blomberg fridge freezer
- A failed defrost heater, thermostat or timer on a frost-free appliance
- A blocked defrost drain, so melt water refreezes rather than draining away
- A door seal letting warm moist air in
- A door left ajar, or a drawer stopping the door closing fully
What you can safely check yourself
- Note whether the ice returns within weeks of defrosting — that is the difference between a fault and normal use
- Check the drain hole at the back of the freezer floor is clear
- Check the seals grip a sheet of paper all the way round
