What is actually happening
This is different from a machine that will not spin: here the drum does not move at all, even at slow wash speed. On a belt-driven machine the belt has almost always come off or snapped, and the giveaway is that the motor can be heard running with nothing happening. On a direct-drive machine there is no belt, so the fault is the motor or its control.
The Miele fault codes that point at this
A Miele washing machine will usually tell you what it thinks is wrong before anyone opens it up. These are the codes we hold for this make that relate to drum not turning:
- F01 — The machine has decided the temperature sensor reading is impossible, so it has stopped rather than risk heating the water blind.
- F15 — The machine isn't getting enough hot water in through its hot fill hose, so it has stopped the cycle.
- F16 — The machine has found too much foam in the drum and has halted the programme rather than carry on.
- F43 — The machine's control board doesn't know which model it is, so it won't run any programme until that information is loaded back in.
- F53 — The machine has lost the signal that tells it how fast the drum is turning, so it stops rather than spin blind.
- F56 — The machine tried to spin but couldn't get the drum above 400 rpm, so it gave up and flagged the spin as failed.
- F64 — The machine can no longer tell where the water routing valve is positioned, so it halts rather than risk sending water to the wrong place.
- F65 — The machine can't detect the cover for the drum light inside the door area, and Miele treats that as a fault worth stopping for.

The usual causes on a Miele washing machine
- A snapped or dislodged drive belt
- Worn motor carbon brushes, leaving too little power to turn a loaded drum
- A seized drum bearing
- A failed motor or motor control board on direct-drive machines
- An item jammed between the inner and outer drum

- Turn the empty drum by hand — very free movement suggests a belt, stiffness or grinding suggests bearings
- Listen during a cycle for a motor running with no drum movement
- Check nothing is jammed at the drum edge
