What E17 actually means
The machine has detected too much foam in the drum and has ended the programme early without finishing the rinse or spin.
E17 is a warning rather than a breakdown. The machine monitors foam levels, and if there is far more suds than it can safely handle it stops rinsing and spinning to avoid foam escaping from the drawer or door. In most cases it points to too much detergent, or the wrong type of detergent, rather than a faulty part.
What usually causes it
- Too much detergent for the load size or water hardness
- Hand-wash or non-machine detergent that foams heavily
- Small load washed with a full dose of detergent
- Detergent left in the drawer from a previous cycle building up
- Occasionally a water valve letting water through when it shouldn't, causing repeated rinsing
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Run a rinse and spin cycle with no detergent to clear the foam
- Next wash, use around half the usual detergent and see if the error returns
- Check the detergent is machine-suitable and matched to your water hardness
- Rinse out the detergent drawer to clear any sludge
- Turn the machine off at the wall for a minute, then restart
