What E18 actually means

The washing machine couldn't balance the load in the drum, so it ended the programme without spinning properly.

E18 is a warning rather than a fault. The machine spreads the washing round the drum before spinning, and if it can't get it evenly distributed it will keep trying — which makes the programme run longer — and then finish without a full spin to avoid damaging itself or shaking itself across the floor. Your clothes will come out wetter than usual.

What usually causes it

  • One heavy item, such as a towel or duvet, bunched on one side of the drum
  • Too small a load, so there isn't enough to balance out
  • Overloaded drum leaving no room for the washing to move
  • Items tangled together or trapped inside a duvet cover or sleeve
  • Machine not sitting level, or still on its transit bolts after installation

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door, untangle the washing and spread it evenly round the drum, then run a rinse and spin
  2. Wash bulky items like duvets or bath mats on their own, adding a couple of smaller items to help balance
  3. Don't cram the drum full — leave a hand's width of space at the top
  4. Check the machine isn't rocking on an uneven floor and that nothing is wedged under the feet
  5. Clean the pump filter at the bottom front, as poor draining can leave a heavy wet load

When to call someone

This often clears with the checks above, and rarely needs an engineer. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
