Electrolux C04 error — oven

What C04 actually means

The oven won't let you start the pyrolytic cleaning cycle, and instead of running it shows C4 — the control thinks a button is being held down, or it isn't happy with the mains supply it's seeing.

Electrolux use this code in two situations. Most often it appears the moment you select the pyrolytic (self-clean) function: the control board reads the plus steam button as already pressed, so it refuses to arm the cycle. The same code is also logged when the board can't read the mains frequency correctly, which points at the power board itself rather than anything you've done.

What usually causes it

  • A sticking or dirty touch/press button on the control panel — usually the plus steam button
  • Grease or cleaning fluid on the control panel confusing the buttons
  • Control panel electronics reading a false button press
  • Power board fault, where the mains frequency isn't being read properly

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the oven off at the wall for a minute, then switch it back on and try selecting the cleaning cycle again
  2. Wipe the control panel and buttons with a damp cloth and dry them thoroughly — grease around the buttons is a common cause
  3. Press each button on the panel in turn and feel for one that isn't springing back
  4. Make sure the oven door is fully closed and latching before you select pyrolytic cleaning

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
