Stop using it for now. Carrying on with this fault risks further damage or a leak. Switch it off at the wall until it has been looked at.

What C05 actually means

The board that switches power to the heating elements has a relay stuck closed, so the appliance has shut itself down rather than risk heating when it shouldn't.

Inside the appliance, a main relay on the power board acts as the switch that feeds power to the heating side. The control electronics have checked that relay and found the contacts are still making when they should have released \u2014 in other words, stuck. Because a stuck relay could mean power reaching an element out of the appliance's control, it locks out and shows the code instead of continuing.

What usually causes it

  • Welded or sticking contacts on the main relay
  • A failed power board (the usual outcome in practice)
  • A momentary electrical spike or brownout leaving the board latched on the fault

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Turn the appliance off at the wall or the isolating switch for a minute, then back on \u2014 if the relay was flagged after a supply glitch the code can clear
  2. Note whether the code returns straight away or only when you select a heat setting; that helps the engineer

When to call someone

This one usually needs an engineer once you have tried the checks above. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
