What F21 actually means

The oven has decided it is already too warm inside to begin the programme it was asked to run, so it has shut the cooking function down.

On this control system the oven checks its own starting temperature before it will run. If the board sees the cavity above roughly 40°C at the moment of starting, it cancels the operation and puts F21 on the display, and the message stays there until the control panel is switched off. It is a protective stop rather than a broken part \u2014 nine times out of ten the oven has been used recently and has not had a chance to drop back down.

What usually causes it

  • Oven still hot from cooking shortly beforehand
  • Cooling fan not clearing heat from the cavity and control area
  • Door left closed on a hot oven with no airflow
  • Temperature sensor reading higher than the true cavity temperature
  • Fault on the control board misreading the start temperature

What you can safely check yourself

Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.

  1. Open the door and let the oven cool right down for an hour or two, then try again
  2. Switch the oven off at the wall for a minute, restore power and reselect the programme
  3. Listen for the cooling fan running after a normal cook \u2014 tell the engineer if you never hear it
  4. Check nothing is blocking the vent at the top or edge of the door, such as a tea towel or trim guard
  5. Make sure the oven is not shut inside a housing with the plinth or upper vent gap obstructed

When to call someone

This sometimes clears with the checks above. If it comes back, it needs looking at properly. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, and it's £66 including VAT for an engineer to come out and diagnose it — £84 in total if it's repaired on the visit with no parts needed. Any parts needed are quoted on site before we fit them — you decide. Every repair carries a 90-day workmanship guarantee.

Outside our area? The explanation above still stands — take it to a local engineer and tell them the code. Knowing it saves them time and you money.
