What F38 actually means
The oven's control electronics have spotted a problem with the temperature reading on their own power board, and have shut the oven down.
There are two temperature readings inside the power board — one from the board's microcontroller and one from a separate sensor (NTC) — and they should rise and fall together. When one sticks or drifts too far from the other, the oven can no longer trust that it knows how hot its own electronics are, so it flags the fault and refuses to carry on heating. It is a fault with the board itself, not with the oven cavity temperature or the food.
What usually causes it
- A failed power board (the documented cause in almost every case)
- The board's internal temperature sensor reading incorrectly
- Electronics running hot because cooling airflow around the board is obstructed
- Heat damage or ageing of the board after long service
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the oven off at the wall for a minute, then switch back on — if it was a one-off glitch the code may clear
- Make sure the vents around and above the oven door are clear and nothing is blocking the gap between the oven and the surrounding units
- Check the oven isn't boxed in by cloths, packaging or foil that would trap heat around the controls
