What F96 actually means
The oven's control board is getting an unbelievable reading from the small sensor that monitors its own temperature, so it has flagged a warning.
Electrolux ovens have an NTC sensor on the power board that keeps an eye on how hot the electronics themselves are getting, separate from the PT500 sensor that measures the cavity. F96 (shown as F196 on some displays) means that board-temperature reading has gone outside its sensible range, so the control can no longer trust it. It is logged as a warning rather than a hard shutdown, so the oven may well keep cooking, but the protection that would normally cut the heat if the electronics overheated is compromised.
What usually causes it
- A failed or drifting NTC sensor on the oven's power board
- A poor connection or damaged wiring to that sensor
- Heat damage to the board from prolonged high-temperature or pyrolytic use
- Blocked cooling airflow around the control area letting the electronics run hot
- A faulty power board itself
What you can safely check yourself
Work through these in order. Anything beyond this — panels off, testing parts, anything to do with the wiring — is an engineer's job, and not one to attempt with the machine plugged in.
- Turn the oven off at the wall for a minute, then back on — if the reading was a one-off glitch the warning may not return
- Make sure nothing is covering the vent slots above or below the oven door, and that the gap around a built-in oven is not blocked by foil, tea towels or packaging
- Let the oven cool fully after a long roast or a pyrolytic clean before judging whether the warning is persistent
